No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
